Seven African fintech companies—Flutterwave, Piggyvest, Kuda, MTN, Bank Zero, Palmpay, and Yoco—have earned a spot on CNBC and Statista’s 2024 list of the Top 250 Fintech Companies. The selection, made from a pool of 2,000 global contenders, highlights the impressive growth and innovation of these African firms in the financial technology sector.
The list, now in its second edition after debuting in 2023, also includes global powerhouses like Mastercard, Klarna, Flywire, and Robinhood. Compiled through extensive research by Statista and data provided by the companies, the selection considered factors such as 2023 revenues, year-on-year sales growth, and workforce size. Unlike traditional rankings, the list is presented without a hierarchy.
Nigerian fintech companies Kuda and Flutterwave were recognized for their impact in neobanking and payment solutions, respectively. South African firms Bank Zero and Yoco received praise for their contributions to similar categories. MTN’s mobile money platform, MTN MoMo, also earned a place among global leaders in payment services. Meanwhile, Piggyvest distinguished itself as the only African company acknowledged in the financial planning category, showcasing its unique approach to savings and investment.
The inclusion of these African companies in a global lineup underscores the continent’s growing influence in fintech innovation and its ability to provide solutions tailored to local and global financial challenges.
