South African fintech company Mama Money has introduced a WhatsApp-powered bank card, in partnership with Pick n Pay and Access Bank, to address financial inclusion challenges. The card aims to serve unbanked populations, particularly those in remote areas or individuals who face barriers like lack of documentation or high banking fees.

The Mama Money Card offers versatile functionality, enabling users to purchase airtime and electricity, deposit and withdraw cash, check balances, freeze the card if lost, and make online and in-store payments. Transactions, including international money transfers to over 70 countries, can be managed entirely via WhatsApp, enhancing accessibility for users familiar with the messaging platform.

The card, available for R99 upfront with a R25 monthly fee, can be picked up at selected Pick n Pay branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban. A special promotion offers free service for the first month to new subscribers in November. Money transfers abroad incur fees of up to 5%, depending on the destination.

While hailed as a step toward financial inclusion, challenges remain. Critics point out that the cost of the card and its availability only at urban Pick n Pay locations may limit access for rural populations. Additionally, concerns about security and digital literacy could impact the card’s adoption among some segments of the unbanked population.

Despite these concerns, the WhatsApp-powered card represents a significant innovation in South Africa’s financial landscape. By breaking down barriers to banking, Mama Money and its partners aim to provide a practical solution for millions excluded from traditional financial services, paving the way for greater financial inclusion in the country.
