Abuja-based autonomous security technology startup Terrahaptix has secured an additional $22 million in fresh funding to scale production of its surveillance and protection systems for critical infrastructure across Africa.
The latest round was led by US venture capital firm Lux Capital, with participation from Resilience17 Capital, an investment firm founded by Olugbenga Agboola, chief executive officer of Flutterwave.
The raise comes just weeks after the company closed an earlier $11.8 million round, underscoring growing investor confidence in Africa-built defence and security technologies. Existing investors, including 8VC and Nova Global, also took part in the round, which Terrahaptix said was completed in less than two weeks.
What they are saying
Terrahaptix Chief Executive Officer Nathan Nwachukwu said the funding significantly exceeded the company’s expectations, noting that it initially set out to raise a much smaller amount.
According to Nwachukwu, the new capital will be used to expand the company’s existing manufacturing facility in Abuja, with plans to ramp up production to 40,000 drones annually. The startup also intends to commence construction of a second, large-scale defence manufacturing facility at an undisclosed location in the coming weeks to meet rising demand from government and military clients.
“In the next few days, we will begin the rapid construction of a second defence megafactory in Africa and grow our engineering workforce,” Nwachukwu said. “This new capital accelerates our goal to give Africa the technological edge needed for counterterrorism and infrastructure security.”
Background
Earlier this year, Terrahaptix—formerly known as Terra Industries—raised $11.75 million in a round led by 8VC, founded by Joe Lonsdale, with participation from several global investors.
At the time, the company disclosed that its systems were already securing infrastructure assets valued at about $11 billion across Africa, backed by tens of millions of dollars in signed contracts across public and private sector clients.
What you should know
Founded in 2024 by Nwachukwu and Maxwell Maduka, Terrahaptix designs and builds long- and mid-range drones, autonomous sentry towers, and unmanned ground vehicles aimed at protecting high-value assets.
Its technology is currently deployed at critical sites, including hydropower facilities in Nigeria and mining operations in Ghana, addressing persistent security challenges in remote and high-risk environments.
In a bid to expand globally, the startup recently announced plans to establish manufacturing operations outside Africa through a joint venture with AIC Steel in Saudi Arabia, positioning Terrahaptix to serve Middle Eastern markets while strengthening its international supply chain.
